Elevate Your Athlete

I’m an elite, I need sweet sleep!!

To be elite, they need sleep

There are many factors that can play into an elite student athlete not receiving adequate sleep, and when they are not getting a well-balanced sleep, they can begin to experience such things as a disrupted immune system, impaired cognitive performance, poor mood, disrupted glucose metabolism, and poor appetite.

An athlete should be obtaining around 7-9 hours sleep per night, and if training or competition is of a night, the athlete must be compensating the missed sleep with day naps of no more than an hour. This will ensure the athlete is able to continue to have maximum physical and mental awareness and function, continuing their education without falling asleep.

Good sleep hygiene is an absolute must If your elite athlete is going to college on a sports scholarship. Beginning a good sleep routine early at home, will prepare them for college where sleep will be a bit harder to achieve. There will be numerous sleep disturbances, and for an elite athlete, a balance between sleep, study, and sport is the only way they will continue to shine bright, and succeed!

Keeping a sleep diary is a fantastic way to monitor sleep patterns and work out the best routine for your athlete. A well balance sleep pattern will eliminate mood swings, help prevent depression, tension, confusion, and fatigue, and will help to increase mental and physical performance and ability.

Some strategies to achieve a sweet sleep can include, a dark and quiet bedroom, no television or screens in the bedroom, reading, no caffeine products, and not too much liquid before bed to avoid midnight toilet runs.
