6 Ways To Impress Coaches With A Smashing Subject Line

It’s all very exciting building up a shiny sportfolio that sings, creating the footsteps of your life to show the coaches who you are, where you’re from, and where you intend to go. First though, you have to make them want to open your sportfolio, and to do this, you need to create a smashing subject line that tells the coach you are EXACTLY what they are looking for, either now, or in the future. Here are six ways to create a smashing subject line, and make it stand out above every other email in the coaches inbox.

1- Be unique. A coach, over time, comes to know the templates used by sporting agents, the particular language, and the order of wording is generally the same on their subject lines. Therefore, you must be unique. Include your own details, and word it to be very specific to what a coach is looking for.

2- Be very clear in what you do, and what you want. If you want to apply for a baseball college scholarship, be sure that you include everything the coach would need to know about the position you play. You need to do this in a few words so it needs to be very specific.

3- Think very seriously about the wording arrangement of your subject line. What does the coach want to know first? What is going to be the one thing they want to see that will catch their attention? Could it be your pitch speed, your dash speed, your weight or height? You must consider what it is that your future coach NEEDS to know about future recruits in order to make them want to open your email and read your sportfolio. Give them the answers they seek.

4- Obvious, but don’t forget to include your name. Please be sure to have both your first and last name. Coaches want to know your intentions, but they also want to know WHO you are. You should include your first and last name on everything. The more people read your name, the sooner they will remember it.

5- Your expected year of graduation. When a coach is looking at new recruits, they are often looking ahead of time. If you include your expected year of graduation, coaches will know when to expect you to be eligible for recruiting. If you get in early, and apply often, coaches will be able to keep an eye on you over the years as you get closer to graduation. If a coach knows they want you early on, they will definitely keep watch and wait. When it comes time to begin the recruitment stages, you will be top of the list.

6- Be very very specific. I will always come back to reiterate this point. The more specific you can be, the more chance you have of successful open rates. A college basketball coach is not going to be looking for a golf player. However, they are not going to know you are a basketball player if you don’t specify. And, if you don’t specify, the coach won’t open your email, instead going for the one below yours that states clearly the athlete is a basketball player graduating in 2020, 6″6 tall, with a GPA of 4, and a 60 metre dash speed of 6.4 seconds. If you are very specific and tell the coaches everything they need to know with regards to recruiting, and you give them what they expect of their players before they even meet you, they will mark your sportfolio for review, revisit it often, and open every piece of correspondence they receive from you from that point on.

Creating a smashing subject line is the most important part of the correspondence process. A coach won’t open your email unless you give them a very good reason to. It is very important that you take the time to create a perfect subject line, make sure you have included every detail the coaches want to know within just a few words.
