An important part of the college bound athlete experience, is keeping on track with a solid study schedule. After all, that’s why college is a consideration. Your athlete wouldn’t be thinking of attending, if they weren’t already dedicated to their study. Creating a study schedule, along with a sporting schedule, will help your athlete keep on top of assessments, exams, and projects. They can continue to keep on track and focused, concentrating on the most important part of this process, their education. It’s recommended that you keep a combined study and sport schedule, but for this blog, I will focus on how to help your athlete create a study schedule, and keep them focused.
This process will take dedication from you as a parent. Your athletes best chance at success, is you. You will have to do a lot of behind-the-scenes work, such as researching and sourcing those colleges and scholarships, gathering documents, creating schedules and so on. If you as a parent can keep focused on those elements, your athlete can continue to focus on what matters most, and that’s their sport and education.
Scheduling is the oil that will keep the college bound wheel moving. Helping your athlete create a full 2020 academic and sporting action plan, with scheduling included, is absolutely essential. Success takes hard work and dedication. Having a full action plan in place, and updating it regularly, is the only way to stay on track, hit every deadline, and achieve a full ride through the college of your athletes choice.

Leave No Stone Unturned
The first step to creating an effective study schedule, is to leave no stone unturned. Sit down with your athlete, and list everything that will possibly interfere in a normal study day. In other words, list every single movement they make from the moment they rise in the morning, and fall in the evening. Here are a few items you will want to consider:
- Assessments, assignments, projects, exams, and presentations deadlines
- The schedule of every class taken at school
- Training, competition, recovery, and travel
- Intensive study sessions for exams, assignments, presentations, research, and performance
- Holiday, rest, and social periods
- Sleep and nutrition
The only way to have an effective schedule, is to not leave any stone unturned. Please be sure to leave a block of time at least twice a week that is left open for appointments, meetings, interviews, and anything else that can pop up last minute. This will ensure that your athlete is not having to skip things or move things around in order to attend important appointments.
The Better You Schedule, The Less You Have To Shuffle
No one wants to spend their day swapping and shuffling things around, feeling an increasing stress that it’s not possible to fit everything in. Your athlete can’t afford to be wasting time trying to shuffle things around. As soon as their focus is taken away from what matters most, cracks start to appear, and they will struggle to meet deadlines. Shuffling things around may work for a week, maybe even a few weeks, but it won’t last. You should help your athlete avoid the trap of shuffling, and help get those schedules in order. The better you schedule, the less you have to shuffle. Scheduling, is the only way to keep on track, meet every deadline, hit each milestone, and nail those scholarships.
